How to Prevent Type 2 Diabetes !! Many people with pre-diabetes develop type 2 diabetes in the next ten years. People with pre-diabetes  have a 50% higher risk of having heart attack and stroke than normal blood glucose levels.

With more than 3,000 adults, with Huber, the northeast, volunteers decided to take the decision of the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), having NIH-funded studies in 27 clinical centers across the country.

Studies have shown that overweight people with pre-diabetes often lose 5 to 7% of their body weight, can stop or delay diabetes. They can do this by increasing fat and calorie intake and increasing physical activity, such as walking 30 minutes in five days a week. Increased physical activity by weight loss and diet, reduction of diabetes in the beginning of approximately 60 percent of study participants. Treatment with metformin, an oral diabetes drug, reduces the risk of developing diabetes by up to 31 percent in the study.

Changes in lifestyle also work for men and women and all ethnic groups. About half of the DPP participants belonged to minority groups who were unevenly suffering from type 2 diabetes: African Americans, Hispanic Americans, American Indians, and Asian Americans and Pacific Islands. In the study, people made changes in lifestyle over 60 years and above, reducing the probability of 71 percent in the development of diabetes.

The sixth major cause of diabetes in the United States is death. Data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that 20.8 million people-7% of the population-is diabetes, and more than 6 million of them do not know that they also have. There are 41 million people in the Northeast.


Small steps to prevent diabetes:


Recent studies have proved that people with high risk for type 2 diabetes can often stop or delay the onset of diabetes with 5 days of physical activity and lose 5 to 7% of body weight.  In other words, you have not rejected yourself to stop diabetes. The key is this: Small steps lead to big rewards. Here are some tips that can help.




Easy steps to increase activity:


  • > Remove TV remote control and wake up to change channel
  • > Try to walk around the house while talking on the phone
  • > Park cars away from shops, movie theaters or your office
  • > Visit museums, zoos or aquarium. 



These are great ways to get active with your family
Eat right. To get started, try some of these suggestions:


  • > You do not have to cut the food that you eat. Just cut down on the amount you eat and eat them less often.
  • > Try to keep meat and poultry fish servings up to three ounces - this is about the size of the deck of the card
  • > Try to eat three sensible meals all day long
  • > Eat more fresh fruits, veggies, nuts and whole grains
  • > Limit fried food. Baking and broiling, meat, chicken and fish are healthy ways of eating.
